Favorable context. Works well on quiet news days, with a clean Asian range between 15 and 60 pips on EUR/USD or GBP/USD. Avoid on NFP, Fed, ECB days, or with an Asian range that's too narrow or too wide.

Overview

The London open concentrates a major share of daily Forex volume. During the Asian night, the EUR/USD market is generally calm and traces a narrow range between a high and a low. When London opens at 08:00 GMT, volatility returns sharply, and price breaks the Asian range in one direction. You enter in the direction of that break with an R/R 1:2 target. It’s a time-based strategy that exploits a recurring market behavior.

Why it works. During the Asian session, European and American traders are asleep, volume is low, and price contracts into a tight band. At 08:00 GMT, the London desks open in a cascade: banks, hedge funds, prop traders. Volume explodes, pending orders accumulated overnight trigger, and the direction the break takes reveals the day’s dominant pressure. You don’t need to predict the direction. You wait for the market to hand it to you at 08:00.

For whom and when. This strategy suits beginners who can be in front of their screen between 08:00 and 10:00 GMT (convert to your time zone). It applies mainly on EUR/USD and GBP/USD on M15, the most active pairs at the London open. It assumes a tradable Asian range and a quiet economic calendar. On NFP, Fed, ECB days, or other major news, you wait: news volatility destroys the pattern.

Precise entry criteria

  • 1Identify the high and the low of the Asian session: from 00:00 to 08:00 GMT.
  • 2The Asian range measures between 15 and 60 pips on EUR/USD M15. Below that it’s too calm to generate a real break; above that it’s already a trend.
  • 3Wait for the official London open at exactly 08:00 GMT (convert to your time zone). Breaks before 08:00 are late Asian noise.
  • 4An M15 candle must CLOSE cleanly above the high (upside break) or below the low (downside break) of the range, not just a wick poking through.
  • 5Check the economic calendar: no high-impact news for USD, EUR, GBP between 08:00 and 12:00 GMT. If there is, you skip the day.
  • 6Enter at the close of the M15 breakout candle.

If a SINGLE criterion is missing, you wait for another day.

Placing the stop loss and take profit

The stop loss goes at the low of the Asian range for an upside break (at the high of the range for a downside break). No tighter: the retest of the broken range is frequent in the first 30 minutes and can pierce the zone before the break resumes. The reasoning: if price moves all the way back to the other side of the range, your break reading is invalidated, and the exit is justified.

The take profit aims for a minimum R/R of 1:2. For the London session, aiming higher than 1:3 often forces a trade that won’t complete before New York arrives at 13:00 GMT: accept the selectivity of R/R 1:2 rather than being greedy.

Be honest about the ratio

1:2 is the standard for this strategy. Be honest with yourself. Over your first few hundred trades, a win rate below 50% is normal. In that case, aim instead for 1:2.5 when the market allows it without forcing. Asian range breaks have a non-negligible rate of false signals on volatile days : compensate with a higher R/R during the learning phase. Your journal will tell you, trade after trade, where you really stand.

Worked example on 200 USD capital

Capital 200 USD · risk per trade 1% = 2 USD.

Setup: EUR/USD M15. The Asian session traces a range between 1.0860 (low) and 1.0875 (high), i.e. 15 pips. Quiet economic calendar, no high-impact news scheduled. At 08:00 GMT, the first London M15 candle opens at 1.0876 and closes cleanly above the high at 1.0880.

  • 1Entry: 1.0880 (at the close of the M15 breakout candle)
  • 2Stop loss: 1.0860 (at the low of the Asian range, 20 pips below the entry)
  • 3Entry → SL distance: 20 pips

Position size. On a EUR/USD micro-lot (0.01), 1 pip is worth about 0.10 USD.

Size = 2 USD ÷ (20 × 0.10 USD) = 1 micro-lot exactly.

  • 1Take profit: 1.0920 (40 pips above, R/R 1:2)
  • 2Potential gain: 40 × 0.10 × 1 = 4 USD (+2% of capital)
  • 3If you lose: −2 USD (−1% of capital)

Not spectacular on a single trade, and that’s precisely the strength of the method. This strategy isn’t designed to make you rich in a few weeks. It’s designed to become a tool you master and apply with discipline over years. That’s the real perspective.

Take a beginner who starts with 200 USD. They master this strategy and a few others. They apply it with discipline, over years. They only grow their capital once their method is seasoned and their statistics are solid. At the end of that road, they can have built an activity that genuinely changes their situation. Not tomorrow. Not in six months. But over the long run, yes. It’s a real possibility, and few activities offer it with such a modest starting capital. It all depends on your discipline and your long-term commitment.

EUR/USD M15. A clean 15-pip Asian range between 1.0860 and 1.0875, no major news scheduled. At 08:00 GMT, the first M15 candle closes cleanly above the high at 1.0880. What do you do?

Common mistakes to avoid

  • 1Trading before exactly 08:00 GMT. Pre-London breaks are Asian noise: the institutional pressure you’re after isn’t there yet.
  • 2Trading a range that’s too narrow (under 15 pips) or too wide (beyond 60 pips). Too narrow = no accumulated pressure. Too wide = it’s already a trend, not a range.
  • 3Ignoring the economic calendar. On NFP, Fed, ECB, US/UK inflation days, news volatility destroys the pattern, and an “08:00 break” can be reversed at 08:30 by a release.
  • 4A stop loss too tight, just at the range high for an upside break. The retest is frequent in the first 30 minutes, and without a margin down to at least the range low, you exit over noise.
  • 5Entering before the breakout candle closes. While the candle is forming, the break can be wiped out by a sharp reversal. Wait for the CLOSE: that is what confirms it.
  • 6Trading this strategy without being present at 08:00 GMT. If your schedule doesn’t let you be in front of your screen at that exact time, this strategy isn’t for you right now. Pick another one in the library that fits your availability.

Key takeaway: an Asian range between 15 and 60 pips, the London open at 08:00 GMT respected, an M15 candle that closes cleanly beyond, a quiet economic calendar. Stop loss at the opposite low/high of the range, take profit at R/R 1:2. This strategy demands time discipline, not just chart reading. If you can be present at 08:00 GMT regularly, it’s a tool you’ll test on demo, refine with your journal, and keep for the years to come. Otherwise, pick a strategy compatible with your rhythm: the library offers several.

Key points to remember

  • 1Identified Asian range + London open + an M15 candle that closes beyond = entry
  • 2Tradable Asian range between 15 and 60 pips on EUR/USD M15, neither too narrow nor too wide
  • 3No trades on major US/UK news days (NFP, Fed, ECB, inflation)
  • 4Stop loss at the opposite low/high of the range, take profit at R/R 1:2
  • 5A strategy that requires being present at exactly 08:00 GMT, not for incompatible schedules
